Ahhh…SUMMER TIME! It’s about to arrive any day now! If you’re stumped for fun ideas this summer, you’ll love this list of 40 exciting summer activities for adults!
This list may have some overlap with activities for all ages, but I’m making sure to include summer activities that adults in particular will be sure to enjoy!
So if you’re ready to kick back a little, bask in the longer daylight hours, and enjoy some fun in the sun, I’ve got you covered!
And a friendly reminder: be sure to check the COVID regulations and closures of these activities in your area before you go!
This post is all about summer activities for adults.
Outdoor Summer Activities for Adults
1. Take a nearby road trip just to eat amazing food
As an Illinoisan, I love researching all the good food places in Chicago and planning out a new place or two to try each time I’m up there.
I highly recommend looking up your nearest city and planning out an awesome food road trip!
2. Go wine tasting
I just went wine tasting for the first time and it was SO relaxing and enjoyable! There’s usually a huge variety of wines from dry to sweet. Even if you aren’t a big wine person (I’m not), you can opt for the fruity wines. I enjoyed those!
3. Take a day trip to a city you’ve never been to
Look at the cities within 2-3 hours (if you’re willing to overnight-it, maybe farther) of where you live and plan out a super fun day of activities there!
When I lived in California, I loved visiting different parts of LA. Always something new!
4. Buy a slip n’ slide or a kiddie pool
Wait, do they even make slip n’ slides anymore?! (Apparently, they do! And you can grab one on Amazon!)
I don’t care what anyone says, summer kids toys are FUN! (Especially if they involve water). Even as a summer activity for adults!
5. Take a beach or lake trip
I know most of America doesn’t live near a beach, but even if you have a lake nearby you can treat it like a beach and make a relaxing day trip out of it!
I am so ready for Lake Michigan trips this summer!
Don’t forget these beach/lake trip essentials!:
A giant beach mat (I have this one and it’s AMAZING! Fits up to 7 people!)
A beach umbrella (REALLY makes a difference on hot days!)
6. Go on a picnic in the park
Picnics in the park are so fun! Bring a good blanket, a picnic basket or cooler with delicious sandwiches and snacks, and you’re set!
Admire the cute animals around you, too!
7. Have a water balloon fight
Another kid-friendly activity that is actually still a ton of fun to put on your list of summer activities for adults. The whole process is a blast, from filling up the water balloons to actually throwing them!
8. Plant some cute plants
Go to your local gardening store and find yourself some cute plants to either plant outside or to keep in the house!
If you’re like me and aren’t a fan of the upkeep of plants, your best bet is something low maintenance like succulents!
9. Stargaze while under the influence
Just saying…stargazing while under the influence (marijuana is best but alcohol works too. Your pick. We’re adults here!) is a completely different experience. SO relaxing and brings a new appreciation to nature!
10. Go to drive-in movies
Drive-in movies are great and are sometimes cheaper than a regular movie theatre. Not to mention how much cozier it is to bring your own blankets and pillows!
11. Read a book by the pool
Not a bad idea to switch up your reading environment! Even if you normally wouldn’t or aren’t a big reader, I suggest you try it.
12. Ride in a hot air balloon
Absolutely a big bucket list goal! I have yet to try it, but I can imagine it must be a unique experience.
13. Go to a waterpark
The best thing about waterparks is NOT overheating like you would at a theme park in the summer! Water rides are such a blast.
14. Spend a full day in nature
Look up the great nature spots in your area and plan a full day spent hiking and relaxing in nature! Make sure to pack plenty of snacks and water.
Bonus points if you find a place with a waterfall!
15. Go mini-golfing
Mini-golf is great fun, especially these days with all the creatively designed courses. Remember to keep score and see who wins at the end!
16. Pitch a tent in your backyard or balcony and camp
Sometimes camping at a campsite can be a real hassle (it also never fails to make me a little nervous with other campers around me!).
BUT sleeping in a tent outside in general is so much fun! Make the most out of it with s’mores and games, too.
If you need a tent, this tent is a GREAT choice. Coleman is always a great and reliable brand for tents!
17. Go to a theme park
If you don’t mind the heat, going to a theme park can definitely make your summer more memorable. Even better is going as an adult without kids.
18. Go driving without a destination
I mean literally: don’t turn on your GPS, choose which turns to make as you go, and hop on a random freeway. Just drive for the sake of driving and see where you end up!
19. Drive to a state you’ve never been to before
I made a completely spontaneous last-minute road trip to Oregon last spring and it was one of the most exhilarating decisions ever! It’s even better when it’s somewhat spontaneous, and you won’t regret it!
If you’re making a real trip out of it and needing more space to carry the items you’re bringing, I highly recommend this cargo topper for the roof of your car! Got me from California to Illinois with no problems!
***Keep in mind: if you’re using a cargo topper when your car DOES NOT have a roof rack, you will need these ratchet tie down straps to keep it in place.
20. Go skinny dipping
This can be hard to pull off, but if you know a secluded body of water (I had a friend with a pretty much private reservoir once) or a nude beach, it’s a relaxing experience to jump into the water and not worry about a bikini!
21. Relax in a hammock
Lay in a hammock, grab a good book if you’d like, and just let go!
22. Jump into water off of a rope swing
Seriously, one of THE most memorable summer experiences ever. If you ever get the chance to jump into water off of a rope swing, you won’t regret it!
23. Attend an outdoor concert
Once concerts open up, I highly recommend going all out with makeup and a cute summer outfit and enjoying an outdoor concert or music festival! Don’t forget to take alllllll the cute photos for Instagram.
24. Sleep out under the stars in the bed of a truck
It’s my dream one day to own a truck just for purposes like these 🤪 The feeling of being propped up off the ground while sleeping under the stars is SO nice.
25. Go ziplining
Did you know that not only can you zipline out in nature, but you can also zipline through the Las Vegas strip? Pretty darn cool!
26. Find a hidden gem in your city
This could be a little-known hiking trail, a more secluded beach, or a small town in the outskirts of your city. See if you can find an area off the beaten path that not many tourists know about!
27. Make a new combination of s’mores
Instead of your traditional Hershey’s, marshmallow, and graham cracker combination, try adding Reese’s, kit-kats, Chips Ahoy, or bananas and nutella to your s’mores next time.

28. Make alcoholic popsicles
There are a ton of great recipes out there for boozy popsicles. Try them out!
29. Make the ultimate ice cream sundae
When’s the last time you went ALL OUT and made an ice cream sundae with all the toppings?! I’m talking sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel, marshmallows, cherries…
I say it’s a must-do for any time of year, but especially for summer!
30. Eat a lobster roll
If you’ve never tried a lobster roll, you are MISSING OUT! I swear! Find a good local seafood restaurant (or travel, if you must!) and find yourself an amazing lobster roll.
31. Pursue a new hobby
Especially if summer means you have more time on your hands than you normally do, it’s super rewarding to pick up a new hobby. Who knows, you might fall in love and want to stick with it!
32. Book an airbnb
Life hack: find an airbnb with a trampoline in the backyard! Why? Because you can use it as another sleeping-under-the-stars opportunity! My boyfriend and I did this and it was the coolest thing ever.
Even if you can’t find one with a trampoline, booking a private airbnb (look for a whole apartment unit or whole house to yourself) is a great getaway choice!
33. Buy a new board game
Think back to your favorite board games as a kid and relive those nostalgic days. There are so many different Monopoly spin-offs these days (even Monopoly for Millennials 😉)
34. Go to the library
Okay, I know this may not sound like peak summer fun. But catching up on your reading list is a great thing to do during the summer when you may have more time to read! Not to mention the peace and quiet of the library is a great feeling.
If you’re looking for some books to add to your reading list, go check out my picks for 5 Personal Development Books That Will Actually Motivate You.
35. Spend a night on the town and go to clubs/bars you’ve never been to
If you’re someone that rarely goes out and enjoys nightlife, this can be an extra exciting summer activity for adults. Take the time to get all dolled up and do some club and bar hopping.
36. Go bowling
Bonus points if you go during cosmic bowling nights with the cool lighting effects! Bowling is one of those things where even if you suck, it’s somehow still a really fun activity.
Take it from me, someone who loves bowling but can’t manage to score above like 70!
37. Take a dance class (or any kind of class!)
I’m a little biased because I’m a dancer, but there are dance studios out there that offer beginning dance classes for adults. You WILL have fun and not be judged!
If not dance, try looking for beginning adult classes in other areas of interest. Even if it’s a one-time thing, it’s still fun to try new things!
38. Bake a 4th of July Cake
Look at how pretty this 4th of July cake is! You definitely don’t need to do anything THAT elaborate, but there are recipes where you add blue and red food dye to make a layered cake with white frosting!
39. Go to brunch and get day-drunk off of Mimosas
I find it so funny that the one time where it’s socially acceptable to get day-drunk is at brunch. Let loose during the daytime for once and go for it!
40. Re-decorate a room in your house
If you skipped spring cleaning, the next best time to re-decorate and declutter is the summer. If you need some decor inspiration, here are some trendy modern apartment decor ideas that you’ll love!
There you have it, a detailed list of 40 exciting summer activities for adults!
Which ones do you want to try the most?! I know the travel-related ones caught my attention, so I’ll be prioritizing day trips this summer for sure!
Have a blast this summer!
